Matchday 17: SC Paderborn 07 – FC Sankt Pauli 1-1

Escape from Shit’s Creek in the dying minutes (again!)

A lot of discussion has been made (especially last year) about the curse of the last minutes hunting FCSP. Seems that things starting to turn the other way around… just like Bartels gave the solution and the 3 points back in August vs MSV Duisburg, Boll offered the critical draw and the escape from Energieteam Arena in the very last seconds of injury time …

Everyone expected a very close match. Paderborn‘s performance so far in the league have brought them among the 5 member group of teams that are expected to hunt promotion until the end. This was clearly smelling trouble and defeat was not an option…

Both squads entered the pitch aware of the significance on the match and during the first 30 minutes we watched a very conservative controlled-tempo game. Entering the last quarter of the first half, the Boys in Brown slowly started increasing the pressure and on two occasions (Saglik  and  Bartels) threatened the opponent but it was  Proschwitz, on the last minute of the first half, who found himself (after a clever high pass) on the left edge of our penalty area and launched a ground-air missile successfully traveling to the the upper right corner of poor Tschauner, leaving everybody in the room with a “what the fuck happened?” look on our faces…

Sankt Pauli got into the second half determined to fight back and keep Paderborn from catching us in the league table. While coach Schubert was sending reinforcements in the field (52′ Naki for Bartels, 56′ Ebbers for Saglik, 67′ Hennings (been a while!) for Schachten), the squad was constantly gaining ground and progressively settled outside the hosts area but without much luck… All situations were successfully handled by Paderborn‘s defense and actually we got very close to “Game Over” status thanks to  Brandy on 71′ and 81′. Reaching the end, pressure reached high levels and on 87th minute the traditional coffee house at Liosia almost exploded when Deniz Naki bypassed even Kruse (not our Kruse – the other guy!) and…missed in front of the defenseless net…

Entered the last minute of injury time with a foul awarded to FCSP at the left wing (looking at Paderborn‘s posts) – last chance of the match and even Tschauner heard South End Scum fans screaming and moved in the opponent’s penalty area… Daube took the shot, the bOll reached Boll’s head and… KABOOOOOOMMM!!! 1-1, the match is over and the Paderborn’s players are having the exactly same look that we had around 60 minutes earlier and the coffee house is a mess 🙂

A golden draw, taking under consideration the way things turned out in the field. Thumbs up for the entire squad AND for Coach Schubert on his first “visit” to a place that he is strongly sentimentally bound to… Let’s keep our heads together and stay concentrated for the match at Ingolstadt, do what has to be done, then SMASH Eintracht Frankfurt (SCHEISS DFB!) and go home for Christmas!

1:0 Proschwitz (45′, Assist: Alushi)

1:1 Boll (90+3′ , Assist, Daube)
