Matchday 21: FC Sankt Pauli – VfL Bochum 2-1

Schachten’s day…

Sebastian Schachten’s 2 (!) goals will probably be the thing to remember out of a very anxious win vs VfL Bochum – distressed victory without spectacular performance in a game that victory (after last week’s defeat) was desperately needed and it the end well deserved…

Game started with ball and field slightly dominated by the brown squad but without any serious incidents until 18th minute when Azaouagh with a very clever shot (right out of the box) beat Pliquett and started reminding us last week’s nightmare. Fortunately, this didn’t last long – only 8 minutes. Schachten on 26′ equalized after a corner kick with a header, having almost zero visibility, put Millerntor on fire and exploded our asses off the chairs!!! All turned good, glasses refueled but the Sunday afternoon extravaganza has started  prematurely… our guests reminded us this 6 minutes later when, after a corner kick (one of our favorite ways of being screwed), Dabrowski fired a head Katiuska missile but Saglik’s head cooperating perfectly with the horizontal post saved the goal… Again ball possession and some pressure – no result and half time ends in a confusing atmosphere.

The equalizer

Second half looked A LOT like last week. Started with a good chance in the opening seconds (Bartels) and then lots of will, lots of effort but actually no effect. Probably, the turning point of the match occurred on 74′ – Bochum left with 10 men on the field after the second yellow card show to Freier. Pressure increased immediately as the guest squad retreated to the box. Redemption came on 81′ – again by Schachten! A 5 meter diagonal shot from the right did the job – second goal for Pauli with 10 minutes left… Of course, it is very easy for everybody familiar with the Brown & White squad to understand and sympathize our anxiety :-). Fortunately, nothing bad happened – guests outnumbered, tried to play all or nothing but without any result. Max Kruse’s shot on 89′ was the last highlight of the match.

Conclusion: A good day for Sankt Pauli fans, especially here in Greece (for obvious reasons). Mission accomplished – nothing fancy, no high class football – effort, strength and Schachten were the critical factors. 3 points won and tomorrow’s super massacre between Eintracht Frankfurt and Fortuna Düsseldorf (where at least one of them will lose ground) will help a little further but BEWARE! Next opponent, MSV Duisburg is NOT to be underestimated under ANY circumstances despite their latest unlucky results…
