Azzouzi out, Meggle Sports Director, Ewald Lienen in!

Sudden development tsunami in Hamburg! Yes, you heard right: Rachid Azzouzi has been released from his duties, Thomas Meggle has been promoted to Sports Director and…Ewald Lienen is the new Head Coach of FCSP! This not just a surprise, this is like the entire Sankt Pauli Cosmos is turning upside down! The only thing sure is that we have a brand new ball game and looks like that there are no intermediate scenarios this time, this is Death or Glory…

Too early to make any kind of evaluation on the situation. This is all brand new, the only think can be done here is expressing some thoughts on the key players involved:

Rachid Azzouzi: We’re no technical experts, thus we avoided to take any position on the man’s skills for the entire 2,5 years that he has been part of the Club (ha ha, yeah, like anybody cares 😀 ). The only things that we can rely on are the hard facts, personally I can recall immediately two:

a) the fact that he took over a squad that had lost promotion in details and he is leaving it at the very bottom of the League where it was flourishing.

b) (something that for sure I’m not the only one remembering) the very first thing he did when he was hired on late May 2012 while Schubert had already kicked out half the squad with less than a month to go until the beginning of the Summer preparation: vacation…

On the other hand, we have heard through these years dear Hamburg friends describing us a guy very friendly (once seen in U23, looked this way), intelligent and quite communicative. All these count a little more when coming to a club like FCSP but unfortunately are not the only virtues required…

In my personal opinion sacking Azzouzi at this point didn’t look like any solution unless was he to be substituted by a guy carrying a few players along… Under any other circumstances probably he should been evaluated by the club after the end of the season. I think that he was probably sacrificed to protect Thomas Meggle from “depreciation”… Regardless of his overall negative results during this period, I would still like to remember him as part of FCSP, good luck to the man and best wishes for success in his future targets…

Thomas Meggle: Fuck me, I’m feeling really awkward here… Like the VAST majority of the FCSP fanbase, we were (and we still are but now it’s meaningless)  behind Meggle from the very first moment. The guy is a walking FCSP symbol, he had (still has) the skills, the attitude and more or less everything required to be the next (and improved) version of Stani. We would really love it if the team could make it with him at the edge of the bench (and then, the only possible way was UP, full speed ahead) and, in the worst case scenario, we would trust him to build the FCSP of the future into the Hell of Liga 3… We are not in a position to know the exact way things happened yet, unlike Azzouzi this is a fuckin’ bomb…

The good side: Meggle stays part of the Sankt Pauli family and actually he’s being promoted. We don’t know if this was his choice but was Meggle moved from the bench, I can’t think any better alternative and a prouder “exit” than this (unfortunately Presidency is occupied, Oke got there first 🙂 ). This is an at least equally important post and it’s giving him the abiltity (in case things don’t go well) to…sack the Coach and appoint himself 😀 😀 😀 Seriously, we preferred him where he was so far but…if we’re going to have a new Sports Director, let there be Meggle! We’re still behind you Thomas Meggle, welcome to your new (and probably bigger) office 🙂

The bad side? This one:

Kleiner Tod tweet

Unlike my previous bollockology regarding Meggle’s “extended authorities”, the truth seems to be here. Kleiner Tod is unfortunately probably right. Maybe (we hope) his new role will drive him towards an even better path, still (and unless a lots of things happen in the near or far future) this looks like a historical opportunity lost for FCSP. Bad luck, bad timing, maybe both of them, whatever the reason, the Coach Meggle fairytale ended premature with a much different outcome than we all hoped…

This is so fuckin’ weird…Looks somehow sad but if I stop for a moment and look at things from another perspective…this could become, in a few years from now, one of the best days of both his and the Club’s life. For now (all together now!) let’s just be happy that Thomas Meggle is still a part of the FCSP family and wait to see what’s in store for all of us – don’t forget, all this is happening in order to save the club…

Ewald Lienen: WOW! This is…food for thought 🙂

Some 2 years ago, when finally The Unspeakable was “released”* (ffs, he is now the German U15 Head Coach!), we had a good beer talk with the notorious ( 🙂 ) Scum comrade, St. John regarding the coach issue. Lienen’s name looked to us back then like an excellent “heretic” alternative – recently released from his Greek obligations, very fresh in memory and a very respectful guy, not only for his coaching skills but also as a guy that you should listen when he talks, regardless if he talks about football or life. Not to our surprise (we are believers, not experts), feedback from more than one sources in Hamburg in response to the question was varying from hesitant to negative…So, when I got the news via SMS thanks to Peter from the Athens Club (Thanx φίλε!), it sounded like a thermonuclear megaton bomb exploding just by my ears – in fact, if the sender was St. John instead, my immediate response would be probably “go fuck yourself, I’m working here” 😀

After the initial shock there’s now a small discrete smile painted on my face. I don’t know if he has indeed the skills required in order to reverse the situation but I know something else. I know that this guy a) has the character to inspire the respect he deserves and mainly b) if we were to choose somebody from outside, depending only on how well he can possibly identify with the FCSP values, “Lienen” would be the word that would automatically come to me, infuenced of course by his long presence here. I believe that Ewald Lienen not only understands 1910% where he is coming but actually knows what this club is about more than some of the youngsters he is about to lead – regarding the skills part, for now I trust the newly elected Presidium just fine…

It’s fully understood that there are a lot of people really sceptical towards Ewald Lienen’s coaching abilities, spoke already with some and even without agreeing, I can understand their views – in fact, I’m not sure…What we all agree (if not, we should) here is this: Lienen deserves not only his chance but a little more than the obvious respect simply because he is a decent, thinking and straight up dude, never afraid to say his opinion, always in a kind way. This means fair treatment… Yes, nobody’s expecting from the fans to have the same patience as they had with Meggle but, on the other hand, elementary patience is required. Lienen should not be “judged” neither tomorrow nor on Sunday, his work should be evaluated during the course of the Spring… The forhrtcoming winter break it’s not just helpful – this timing is on it’s own a basic argument justifying what happened today.

So let’s give the man a warm welcome and make both him and the squad feel at home, especially during the Saturday game vs Aalen, a game which, under these circumstances, could be won just by the fans (OK, figure of speech, nobody gets lazy!). From us here at the Scum neighborhood, a very warm welcome to a man who we consider somehow as “ours” 🙂

Herzlich Willkomen Herr Lienen!

*EDIT: after some mature thinking, seems more like last year, right before Vrabec – Scum Brain Decay Percentage: 1910 🙂

PS: We haven’t forgot about The Man, Deniz Naki and the recent developments regarding the unhappy ending of his flirt with the Club. The reason that there’s no extensive mention about him here is not only the signifigance and impact of today’s events – there’s also my current inability to interpret possible links within this avalanche of events as well as the (quite small) posibillity of what happened today affecting what happened yesterday…Nothing more needed to be said here now, except probably this:

FUCK MICHAEL JORDAN, THERE’S ONLY ONE NUMBER 23…
